Fine dining around Stoughton, Wisconsin
The quaint and charming Laz Bistro is recognized as serving the best Kansas City BBQ outside Kansas City. The Bistro offers an array of mouth-watering culinary experiences including Mediterranean, Asian, Cajun, Cuban, Caribbean and more dishes and seafood specialties prepared with a touch of imagination by Chef Cary Lazzaro. The full bar offers a fine selection of outstanding wines from several regions and countries, and a wide variety of micro and imported beers. Laz’s is only three blocks from the Inn so it is a nice walk. I know you’ll enjoy your evening out and your walk back to the Inn.
Join the celebration for Syttende Mai!
Syttende Mai – The Norwegian heritage of many of Stoughton’s citizens is celebrated each year as our entire town and thousands of guests observe Syttende Mai. The words “Syttende Mai” are Norwegian for “seventeen May,” and we hold the event on the weekend closest to May 17 each year.
Syttende Mai is a very colorful, gala, family-oriented affair with many people wearing authentic Norse costumes. There are folk dancing performances by the world famous Stoughton Norwegian Dancers, exhibits of Norwegian rosemaling (painting) and hardanger (needlework), a Norse costume style show, Norwegian church services, a smorgasbord of Norwegian foods, a variety of musical performances, and an Ugliest Troll Drawing Contest.
Other local events include community-wide garage sales, the Coffee Break Celebration and Dog Daze in August and Victorian Holiday in December. The 14 South Artists Gallery Tour is held in September and the 14 South Holiday Art Sale, during the first weekend in December, is the place to go for unique, handcrafted gifts.
For starters, there are three antique stores downtown, a wonderful quilt shop, a movie theater, The Stoughton Opera House and Village Players Theater for live entertainment. Gift stores include artisan galleries, distinctive Scandinavian shops, unusual kitchenware, Wisconsin products and crafts.
There are lots of outdoor activities, too. The beautiful Wisconsin countryside offers plenty of ways to enjoy the outdoors. Rent a canoe and get on the lovely Yahara River. Lake Kegonsa State Park and Cam-Rock Park are great places to cross country ski, hike and just enjoy nature. There are also snowmobile trails, fishing, swimming and bike trails. Take a walking tour of five Historic Districts featuring restored Victorian homes and businesses. Seven golf courses are within a 20-minute drive.
