About Del McCoury Band
It’s hard to imagine that the Del McCoury Band can continue to get better and better. Could it be that Del’s 50+ years of experience make him one of the most skilled in the business? Could it be that his singing epitomizes the heart and soul of bluegrass music? Could it be that the band includes some of the best and engaging instrumentalists today? Could it be that the group navigated head-on into the new millennium with snappy material that is eclectic and tastefully rendered? The answers to all of the above are an undeniable “YES!” Read the rest of this entry »

The first members of the original Madison Brass Band, founded in 1863, were businessmen, cobblers, cigar-makers, stone-cutters, and a saloon proprietor. Only one member was a professional musician. The band went into remission for many years until the early 2000′s when it revitalized its mission to bring the great British and American brass band tradition back to the greater Madison area. In addition to concerts, festivals and many events in southern Wisconsin, MBB has also performed twice at the Grand Celebration of Brass Bands in Iowa. Read the rest of this entry »

After working for 14 years in German restaurants in Milwaukee, Mader’sand Karl Ratzsch’s, I was up to find out how Essen Haus in Madison compared. I was having dinner with my collage roommate, Dennis, who was in town for a meeting. He doesn’t like to make decisions so it was up to me to pick a place. I’ve known about the Essen Haus for years, but never went because I had worked in two of the best German restaurants in the USA.
I wasn’t disappointed. The atmosphere is very old world beer hallish. Great displays of steins and other old world memorabilia. The waitress was in a Durandal to add to the atmosphere. Read the rest of this entry »
The meticulously restored Stoughton Opera House is one of Wisconsin’s premiere live music theaters.
After a holiday respit the Opera House comes to life again with Pro Arte Quartet on January 23rd.
The Pro Arte Quartet has enjoyed a long and distinguished career as one of the most enduring string quartets in existence. Founded in Brussels in 1912 by violinist Alphonse Annou and violist Germain Prevost, the Pro Arte became the court quartet to Queen Elisabeth of Belgium. Its world reputation soared with a European tour in 1919, earning the group such outstanding acclaim that many composers – including Bartok, Milhaud, and Honegger – composed new works for the Pro Arte. In 1940, stranded in the United States by the outbreak of World War II, the University of Wisconsin-Madison offered the Quartet the position of Artist-in-Residence, which continues to the present day.
Current members, David Perry and Suzanne Beia, violins, Sally Chisholm, viola, and Parry Karp, cello, have continued the Pro Arte legacy.
“The Pro Arte Quartet plays all very demanding music with perfect sympathy and superb musicianship…” (American Record Guide)

Habitat ReStore Salvage Art Show and Auction
taking place at Robert Rae Art Gallery in Stoughton, WI during October.
Artists have been asked to produce an art piece that contains recycled material.
The Big Event will kick off with ”Meet The Artists” reception
Friday, October 8 / 6-9 pm.
There will be Live Music by Turner Collins and Friends, and snacks to munch on.
It promises to be a great show with some 40 artists displaying 70+ pieces. Talking to the gallery owners, John and Lynn, they said that about 1/3 of the art is sculpture. So if you don’t have room to hang something on your wall you may find some table or floor space to place a piece. Some interesting jewelery will also be shown.
You can take a look at some of the art at HRSASaA and after October 1st there will be a place to place a bid on a piece. This is a great way to support Habitat for Humanity of Dane County so bid often and bid high. Just think you could have all your Christmas shopping done by the end of October.
So plan a get away to Stoughton. Take in some great art any day during October at the Habitat ReStore Art Show and Auction, at Robert Rae Art Gallery and consider an overnight stay at Naeset Roe Inn when you are here or come to pick up you new artwork.

A few of my favorites will be presented. Kathryn Vaughn at Main Street Flowers. You may recognize this name from Madison Radio. She hosts a wonderful show on Magic 98 every Sunday morning. Several of her pieces are on display at Naeset Roe Inn. Greg Rodriguez at Yaraha River Co-Op, is an outstanding painter. He just finished a painting of Naeset Roe Inn for me that is hanging in the West Parlor. Mona Semerau is a wonderful silversmith that does such delicate work. Stop and see her at Vincenzo’s and have a glass of wine while you are there. So stop in and see some new art during the Main Street Stoughton Art Walk Friday, July 23rd 5-9pm. If you can’t make it, most of these artists are displayed at other times in these shops. Come and see them during a stay at Naeset Roe Inn. The inn is one block from Main Street and a great walk any day of the week.
It isn’t often that we as innkeepers get handwritten notes from guests. It seems that it is a lost or dying art. I have to admit that I am one who has gotten into the electronic age for running my business. I send electronic confirmations and thank you notes. I also send e cards for birthdays and special occasions. I even design my own cards online and print them to hand deliver. My hand writing is atrocious so that is why I send electronically, and grateful for word processors and printers. Read the rest of this entry »
